Beware! Scary Skin Trends to Avoid this Halloween!

advice tips & tricks Oct 29, 2023

As Halloween approaches, it's time to embrace the spooky spirit and have some fun. However, when it comes to your skin, there are certain trends that are more trick than treat. We're here to warn you of the top scary skin trends that you should definitely avoid trying. Let's uncover these popular but harmful hacks that have been haunting social media feeds.

1. Dermaplaning:
Dermaplaning involves using a sharp blade, typically a scalpel, to remove skin cells and peach fuzz from the face for a smoother complexion. While it may seem tempting to try this trend at home or even in a clinic, for the sake of your skin barrier, please put the blade down! Firstly, this technique can cause injury to the skin such as cuts or nicks and often causes skin irritation. But the reason we are really against it is due to the integrity of your skin and skin barrier. Dermaplaning removes the top layer of skin, known as the stratum corneum. We have all been led to believe these skin cells are "dead", however until they have physically come away from the skin, these cells still play an important role in maintaining a healthy skin. Not only do they provide a physical shield from the outside world, protecting us from all kinds of nasties and pathogens, they also maintain our skin's pH level and communicate with cells on the lower levels allowing them to adapt to the current conditions and protect our skin from long term damage... Imagine taking the roof off your house! The walls, furniture and carpet would be an absolute mess... It's exactly the same.

2. Home Micro-Needling:
Micro-needling has gained popularity for its potential benefits in improving skin texture and reducing fine lines. However, attempting this procedure at home can lead to disastrous results. Without proper training and sterile equipment, you risk infection, scarring, and uneven results. Leave micro-needling to the professionals who can ensure your safety while achieving desired outcomes.

3. Excessive Exfoliation:
Scrubbing away "dead" skin cells may seem like a good idea, but over-exfoliating can lead to redness, irritation, and even a stripped and impaired skin barrier. Remember, moderation is key when it comes to exfoliation. Stick to gentle exfoliants suited especially for your skin type and follow the recommended usage guidelines - we recommend between 1-3 times per week only.

 4. Pimple Popping:
This one's an old favourite... Let's not pretend we all haven't been totally enthralled by Dr Pimple Poppers videos at one point or another! But while it can be tempting to extract your pimples at home, there are a few reasons why we don't recommend it. Extracting acne lesions can cause infection, cause acne to worsen, cause scarring, hyperpigmentation or inflammation and also delay healing time. To sum things up, leave those pimples alone. We have much better treatment options available so please ask us for advice!

5. Artificial Tan:
We all want to have that sun kissed glow, especially heading into summer! Whilst we are not about encouraging 'natural' tanning by way of harmful UV exposure, it's important to note that not all forms of artificial tan are created equal. Many self-tanning products contain ingredients like alcohol, preservatives, chemicals or carcinogens that can dehydrate the skin, cause irritation or block the pores... No thanks! Some newer formulations have improved safety profiles compared to others so always do your research before making a choice. Don't forget, artificial tan is not a substitute for SPF!
